Outdoor Firepits
Recreation fires are authorized.
If using an approved container or constructed firepit, recreation fires can be positioned no closer than 15 feet of a buidling (including the patio extension) or combustible item. If not using an approved container or constructed firepit, recreation fires must be a minimum of 25 away from a building (including the patio extension) or combustible item.
Firepits cannot exceed 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.
The firepit must be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished.
A fire extinguisher or other fire fighting materials (water and hose) must be available for immediate utilization should the fire become a hazardous situation.
Avon Lake Codified Ordinance 660.8 requires that only dry, clean, and seasoned firewood can be used as fuel for outdoor fires.
The State Fire Marshall as well as the Local Fire Marshall has the authority to place a ban on all recreation fires based upon: drought, atmospheric conditions, and other environmental conditions that would make a ban necessary. Please ensure there is not a ban in effect prior to making the decision to burn.
Questions about recreation fires or potential bans in effect can be directed to the Avon Lake Fire Department at 440-933-8305.
